Raj Patel at UWO on Thursday Feb 26, 2009

Whew!  What a hectic week.  Hopefully I’ll have time to write more this evening, but for the moment I just wanted to post this upcoming event.  Raj Patel is the author of the wonderful book Stuffed and Starved.  He’s quite brilliant and very interesting.  This talk will definitely be worth attending if you can make it!

“How is it possible that one part of the world’s population suffers from an obesity epidemic while in other parts of the world people are dying of starvation? Why did 40 million American people go hungry in 2008 when 100 billion pounds of edible food was thrown out in the U.S. ? Raj Patel, renowned food activist and the author of Stuffed and Starved, will discuss the most broken down of the world’s industries: the food system, and how that system is linked with energy, water, foreign policy, environment, public health, workers’ rights, education, violence and crime.

  1. I got Stuffed and Starved for Christmas but haven’t had time to read it yet. I’m looking forward to hearing your report on the talk!
Perhaps I should make the book next on my reading list.

  2. I’ll write about Raj’s wonderful talk hopefully tomorrow, but definitely read his book. I haven’t finished it (yet – everyone keeps borrowing it) but it’s brilliant, well written and very important. Many food courses are now using it as their primary text. I think if you’re going to read just one book to understand the global food system, this would be the book. Well, this book and Tony Weis’s “The Global Food Economy” (ttp://www.fernwoodpublishing.ca/book/306).

    Happy reading!

  3. Do you know Mel Sampson knows this author? I only just connected the dots! Apparently he was named the Messiah after an interview in the Kolbert report?
