More on Raw Milk

While I haven’t written much about raw milk, it is a topic that is near and dear to my heart.  Nearly two years ago I attended a talk given by Michael Schmidt of Glencolton Farms and his saga around trying to sell raw milk in Ontario.  As I sat listening, I wondered to myself, “why is it that we can buy raw meat, heck, we can buy cigarettes that are clinically proven to kill us, yet we can’t buy raw milk.”  It makes no sense unless you start to delve into the politics around it.  It’s all about power, and not at all about milk.  It was this talk that launched me on the path I continue on today, researching the politics of food.

I still have not found myself a source of raw milk, but I’ll get there.  In the meantime, here’s an interesting blog that got auto-linked to my last raw milk post.  It’s called The Bovine, and it follows Michael Schmidt’s saga in great detail.  Well worth taking a look at, especially if you are not familiar with the issue, or with his story.

I’m heading out of town for the weekend and probably won’t get a chance to write again until next week.  Until later…

  1. Although I’m very interested in the idea of raw milk in my diet, it’s prohibited to sell it in Canada. So short of buying a cow, marrying a farmer, or finding some other way of obtaining your raw milk for free, you’re likely out of luck.

Here’s an idea: a raw milk speakeasy.

  2. I like this idea! I think it could fly.
