Geo-Engineering: Just Say NO!

I just read this article which documents how scientists are advocating “geo-engineering” to curb climate change. The article states:

“The plan would involve highly controversial proposals to lower global temperatures artificially through daringly ambitious schemes that either reduce sunlight levels by man-made means or take CO2 out of the air. This “geoengineering” approach – including schemes such as fertilising the oceans with iron to stimulate algal blooms – would have been dismissed as a distraction a few years ago but is now being seen by the majority of scientists we surveyed as a viable emergency backup plan that could save the planet from the worst effects of climate change, at least until deep cuts are made in CO2 emissions.”

This is the scariest bit of news I’ve read in a very long time.  Apparently plans to counteract global warming include attempts to:

– Injecting the air with particles to reflect sunlight
– Creating low clouds over the oceans
– Fertilising the sea with iron filings
– Mixing the deep water of the ocean

I’ve read elsewhere about plans to release CO2 eating synthetic bacteria into the oceans to reduce the CO2 in the air.  The bacteria would be programmed with a self-terminating gene so they don’t take all the CO2 out of the air.

Gee, there’s no way that could possibly go wrong…

Possibly even more shocking, the only thing these people seem to be worrying about is that such efforts will curb international undertakings at reducing CO2 emissions.  What about the possibility of totally screwing things up even worse than they already are?  I mean, we have absolutely no clue how this planet maintains its balance, and we’re planning on messing with it even more than we already have?  If that doesn’t assure catastrophe, I don’t now what will.  I’d much rather face the mess we’ve already created than messing with the oceans.  What are these people thinking???  And how terrifying that these “experts” may be allowed to run experiments that will affect every living being on the planet, without even consulting with us.

Why is it so hard for people to get what’s going on and what needs to be done?
